Spark Chess The Game of Spark Moves
Differences
What changes on the board
- The goal is to capture the king
- Check, checkmate and stalemate are removed
- If the side to move has no legal move, the game is drawn
- Castling is removed
- Swap moves a pawn and one friendly piece
- Shift moves only the pawn
- Material stays unchanged: Spark Moves exclude captures and promotions
- In notation, a Spark Move uses the > (greater-than) sign
- The pieces are the king, queen, rook, bishop and knight
- Only friendly pieces participate in the move
- A pawn moves in every Spark Move
- A pair of pieces protects the interaction square
- A regular pawn move is one square forward
- A Spark Move lifts the forward-only restriction
- A pawn may use any rank except the promotion rank
- White
- ranks 1–7
- Black
- ranks 2–8
- The first repetition of a position is a draw
- The 50-move rule is removed
Automatic endgame draws
Two bare kings immediately draw if they are not adjacent. Adjacent kings continue playing.
King and one bishop or knight against a lone king immediately draw when the kings are not adjacent, the minor piece does not attack the lone king, and the lone king is outside the danger zone.
Bishop danger zone: all edge squares, plus b2, g2, b7, g7.
Knight danger zone: a1–c1, f1–h1, a8–c8, f8–h8; a2, a3, a6, a7, h2, h3, h6, h7; b2, g2, b7, g7.
Inside the danger zone play continues; a win is not implied. Extra material or a rook does not qualify for this automatic draw.
Rules
Two mechanics of Spark Moves
Shift
- The square d4 is empty.
- The rook on d1 and the bishop on b2 interact on d4.
- The pawn on f2 moves to d4.
A pawn moves to any empty square that two of your pieces attack.
- White pawns may use ranks 1–7.
- Black pawns may use ranks 2–8.
Practice
